Under the title “Flow,” the Kunstmuseum Heidenheim is presenting three parallel solo exhibitions that deal with different aspects of flow. Each floor of the museum will feature one artist: Luka Fineisen in the Hugo Rupf Hall, Enya Burger in the Small Temporary Exhibition Hall, and Tatjana Vall in the Hermann Voith Gallery. Most of the works have been developed or adapted specifically for the rooms of the Kunstmuseum.

The three exhibitions are not only a tribute to the building’s original use as a swimming pool, but also explore the phenomenon of flow in its various forms: from networks to intangible volumes to electric currents.

Flow sees itself as a counter-concept to the present, which is characterized by ruptures, disruptions, and tensions. For the aesthetics of spreading forms, networks, and information flows are a symbol of harmonious exchange. What flows does not stand still, but is a continuous stream, an adaptable mass that is sometimes rousing, sometimes decelerating, through the connectedness and interaction of all its parts.

Luka Fineisen – The Aesthetics of Flow

Luka Fineisen (born in Offenburg in 1974, lives and works in California, USA) explores moments of change and the relationship between volume, matter, movement, and space in her art. She repeatedly explores the boundaries and reversals of relationships. In Fineisen’s expansive works, the rigid becomes soft, the fluid becomes hard, the small becomes large, and the large becomes small. For the former swimming hall, the artist has developed a presentation that plays with the site’s past as a swimming pool. For example, the fountain in the museum foyer is filled with what appears to be liquid milk, and a black viscous mass drips from the ventilation grille in the vault onto the floor, while an organic form that appears frozen and cut off plays around the columns.

Enya Burger – Slime as an alternative knowledge system

Enya Burger (*1996, lives and works in Düsseldorf) explores a special form of flow in her installation “Guided by memories.” The protagonist here is the slime mold of the genus Physarum polycephalum. Without any nerve cells, the slime mold moves fluidly, has been proven to have a specific form of memory, and can even find its way through mazes.

Burger invites the audience into a glass installation where they can listen to the sound of the slime mold growing. In addition, the artist shows works in which she explores the historical and symbolic attributions of slime, as well as those based on research into the mythological interpretation of slime mold, thereby introducing us to alternative knowledge systems.

Tatjana Vall – Flow between mechanics and nature

Tatjana Vall (born in 1994 in Sombor, Serbia, lives and works in Munich and Berlin) will create two large-scale installations in the Hermann Voith Gallery, in the area of the former swimming pool. In these, the artist combines the physical element of water with technical and kinetic apparatus. Hoses and reflections created by light extend the works into the space. Here you will encounter works from the art collections that take up certain aspects of Vall’s oeuvre.

The artist is concerned with uncovering the subtle irregularities inherent in physical reality. To this end, she draws on insights from psychology, art history, computer science, and image science, translating them into mechanical sculptures and ecosystematic installations.
