Based on the photo art collection of the Kunstmuseum Heidenheim, the exhibition provides an insight into how artists dealt with the medium of photography in the 20th century.

The spectrum ranges from the beginnings of the artistic use of photography in the New Vision of the 1920s to current forms of photographic art. The focus is mainly on those photo-artistic strategies that have developed since the 1960s and shape the image of photo art today: Photography as documentation of temporary happenings and land art projects, photographic role-playing (Cindy Sherman), appropriation art (Hans-Peter Feldmann), artistic photography of the intimate (Nan Goldin) and the objective (Bernd and Hilla Becher and the Becher School). In addition, the exhibition shows how photography is used today by young artists as a hybrid medium that combines photography with installation, video and printmaking.
