The works of Leipzig-based artist Luke Carter draw on personal experiences, particularly those relating to the everyday realities of queer people in Germany.
A central motif in his paintings, drawings and prints is the male body, caught between the tensions of intimacy, sexuality and individuality.

It is in this context that the exhibition title, *The Edge of Intimacy*, should be understood. For the boundaries between anonymous sex, the development of an intimate romantic relationship, and the question of how the self changes and adapts in this process are often fluid. Formally, Carter illustrates this through forms, colours and lines that interpenetrate and overlap.

With the exhibition title, the British-born artist also alludes to art history. This is because he employs techniques of the so-called ‘Hard Edge’ style in his compositions. This style of abstract painting emerged in the late 1950s and is characterised by sharp edges, precise lines and geometric forms.
Carter applies the methods of this style to figurative representations. These are subsequently abstracted to such an extent that the motifs depicted can be grasped at a glance, whilst certain body parts or specific details can only be identified at a second glance.

At the Kunstmuseum Heidenheim, Carter is exhibiting a selection of paintings and woodcuts, as well as a work created specifically for Heidenheim.

About the artist:
Luke Carter (born in 1991 in the UK) studied illustration in Bristol. In 2018, he moved to Germany to study at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig, where he is currently a postgraduate student. Alongside his own artistic work, he creates large-scale street art projects and murals, and runs creative workshops.
