The photographer, economist and author Alfred Diebold (*1953 in Heidenheim) shows political and historical testimonies, landscapes and traditions from all over the world in his documentary series.

Works from his Remains of Paranoia project can be seen for the first time in Germany at the Heidenheim Art Museum. For this project, Diebold traveled to Albania to capture the remains of military buildings, armaments and bunkers. They were built during the communist regime under Enver Hoxha. They are an expression of the paranoia nurtured and fueled by the ruler about an invasion and the increasingly isolated situation in which the country found itself from 1961 onwards.

Photos of the underground tunnel at Porto Palermo, the air base in Kuçovë and the tanker brigade in Pocestë show the extent of the fear and preparations for a possible attack.

Together with maps and explanations of the history, the exhibition aims to contribute to a better understanding of the Albanian past, but also of the consequences of a military build-up.
